It makes travel possible in the winter and is versatile enough to access backcountry areas with the vehicles 4 wheel drive. Overall the conversion of the SUV to a camper was a great success. A downside of this approach though is that any supplies on the shelf would likely block the back window. One possible solution would be to build storage as a shelf above the bed and lowering the platform 8 inches. Sitting upright is tough with limited space between the platform and the ceiling of the vehicle. The storage hatches are great to make the most of the space in the camper, however accessing them requires moving any of the things on top of the platform and can be cumbersome. Some minor considerations if I were to build out another SUV: Foam mattress – I found an old foam mattress and cut it into 3 sections for storage than fitted each section with a custom sewn sheet.ford escape camper conversionfaith-based jobs near berlin. Aquatainer 7 Gallon Tank – $15 for purchase at most Wal-Marts ford escape camper conversionhigh-waisted sweatpants wide leg.Various Storage Totes – I just bought some of the cheapest totes I could find at Wally World to make organization and staying neat possible on my travels. Our client was referred to us by her dad (who was screwed over by another conversion company) and wanted a quick and easy weekend camper with a bed, storage and a place for a stove. I selected the matching Rockpals 60 Watt panels for $150. COST OF MATERIALS & LABOR: 2600 TIME TO COMPLETION: 7 DAYS THE BUILD Check out this 2015 Ford Escape that we built out for a client recently. Portable Solar Panel – For charging the portable power supply. This I assume will be enough power to for my needs and run my cooler for nearly 8 hours when I am sleeping. This unit runs about $300 but will provide 280 watt hours of power. For this I selected the Rockpals 300W Portable Power Station. Portable Power Supply – Mainly for powering my cooler, laptop, phone and charging various small electronic devices.I opted for the Wagan 12V Cooler which runs for about $60 on Amazon. Electric Cooler – To keep food cool and reduce my cost of buying meals while traveling. The top of the platform is 1/2 inch plywood with carpeting stapled on top secured to the based with hinges.Ī few things I added as a functional part of the build out to make travel more comfortable are: The platform base was made exclusively from untreated 2X4 and 4X4 lumber. I chose to build out hinging storage sections on the platform, carpet the platform and make an extendable section allowing the front seats full motion forward and backwards to make my trip as comfortable as possible.Īll of the materials and hardware for this build out cost less than $120. There are definitely more simple ways to approach this project. The entire build out took about 16 hours. In this video, I detail my journey in purchasing a 2008 Ford Escape, building a platform for sleeping and turning the SUV into a camper for my trip across the United States.
